Biography

The Earth has written its own history in thousands of rock pages, the geological record, which contains evidence of the evolution and interactions of continents, oceans, atmosphere, and biosphere. Despite the rock archive is really dismembered, scattered and hidden in remote places or deeply buried, gathering the pieces together is our only opportunity to reveal the history of our planet, our history. I am a researcher who works in plate tectonics, paleogeography, geodynamics and Earth history combining field geology, paleomagnetism, geochemical and geophysical methods and plate modeling.

I completed my Ph.D. at Universidad de Salamanca (Spain) in 2012. Since then and until 2016 I was a postdoctoral fellow at Utrecht University (The Netherlands). Later I obtained the prestigious JSPS postdoctoral fellow (Japan Society for Promotion of Science) to study the tectonic evolution of the Paleotethys and Panthalassa oceans interface during the Pangea amalgamation. Since then I have been Assistan Professor at Tohoku University (2019-2026), Ramón y Cajal Fellow at the University of Granada (2021-2023) and ‘Científico Titular’ (Scientist) at the Spanish Research Council (CSIC).

Late Carboniferous Paleomagnetism From North Qiangtang Block Reveals a Multibranched Paleo-Tethys Ocean

The North Qiangtang Block occupies a pivotal position within the eastern Tethyan realm, and its paleogeographic reconstruction is critical for constraining Tethyan geometry and evolution. However, its Late Paleozoic paleogeography and Paleo-Tethyan Ocean–continent configuration remain controversial due to limited reliable age-constrained paleomagnetic data. Here we present paleomagnetic and geochronological data from Late Carboniferous limestones of the Walongshan Formation, providing an absolute-age-constrained paleomagnetic pole. Stepwise demagnetization of 126 specimens from 19 sites isolated a pre-folding characteristic remanent magnetization carried by magnetite, indicating a paleolatitude of 19.5 ± 5.2°S at 317 ± 11.6 Ma. Together with published paleomagnetic and geologic constraints, these results suggest that the North Qiangtang–Indochina “central continental domain” remained at middle to low latitudes in the Southern Hemisphere from the Late Carboniferous to the Middle Permian, favoring a dual-branch Paleo-Tethys configuration with a northern Jinshajiang oceanic basin (∼5,500 km) and a southern Longmu Co–Shuanghu oceanic basin (∼3,300 km).

The Beginning of a Wilson Cycle in an Accretionary Orogen. The Mongol–Okhotsk Ocean Opened Assisted by a Devonian Mantle Plume

The subduction initiation dynamics and southwestern extension of the Mongol-Okhotsk suture zone in Central Asia have been enigmatic due to a scarcity of robust ophiolitic records. This study presents an integrated analysis of petrography, geochemistry, and geochronology conducted on the newly discovered Erdendalai ophiolite in the Dundgobi Province of Mongolia. The ophiolite mainly comprises serpentinized peridotite, gabbro, anorthosite, and chert. Zircon U-Pb dating of an anorthosite sample yields a crystallization age of 350 ± 4 Ma (early Carboniferous), which identifies this ophiolite as the oldest documented ophiolite within the Mongol-Okhotsk Ocean realm. Geochemically, the gabbroic rocks exhibit normal mid-ocean-ridge basalt−like signatures with slight depletion in high field strength elements and enrichment in large ion lithophile elements, resembling forearc basalts. The anorthosites are interpreted to have crystallized from hydrous, arc-related tholeiitic magmas derived from boninitic precursors. These features collectively indicate that the Erdendalai ophiolite formed in a supra-subduction zone setting, specifically an intra-oceanic forearc, during the early Carboniferous. Detrital zircon age spectra from the enclosing Khoidgobi Formation schists show a youngest peak at ca. 302 Ma, constraining the accretion and emplacement of the ophiolite to the latest Carboniferous or later. Our findings not only confirm the southwestern extension of the Mongol-Okhotsk suture but also provide critical evidence for the early Carboniferous subduction initiation of the Mongol-Okhotsk Ocean, likely facilitated by the presence of a continental ribbon rifted during the ocean’s opening. The distribution of supra-subduction zone ophiolites with different ages along the Mongol-Okhotsk suture zone may document lateral propagation of subduction initiation.
